(empth_t, empth_sem_t) [_EMPTH_WIN32]: Use incomplete types, not void for
abstract data types.

Supply prototypes where possible.  This uncovered type errors with
thread entrypoints:
(lwpSelect, shutdown_sequence): Parameters didn't match thread entry
point prototype.
(lwpEntryPoint): Arguments didn't match thread entry point prototype.

Change linkage of functions without prototype declaration to static
where possible.

Remove some superflous declarations, replace others by suitable
includes.

Windows cleanup: include proper headers, remove unused variables, fix
type of signal handler.  Mostly from Ron Koenderink.

(move_ground): Remove superflous parameter `mobility'.  Callers
changed.  Edit for clarity.  No functional changes.

(emp_sig_t): Pre-ISO C compatibility cruft.  Just use void.

(payo): Previous revision screwed up ally bonus.

(upd_ship): Capability fish didn't work together with capability oil.

(player_accept): Passed pointer to incorrect type to accept().

(clean): Fix for Windows.

Fix generated HTML: proper !DOCTYPE, head, body, p.

Clarification.

Use plain double quote instead of \*Q and \*U in .EX, because it's
typed text.

(Q, U): Expanded into nothing; fix.

(lF): Unused, remove.

Deviated from actual behavior (matched old behavior?).  Fixed.

empclient later than 2.8 support the Empire 4 protocol, too.  Don't
claim no other client supports it.

Fix title (second argument of TH).

Stricter tests for requests.
Request s3 doesn't exist, remove translation.

Fix indentation; $ in the middle of regexps confuses Emacs, so use \Z
instead.  No functional changes.

Parse requests properly.  Simpler, more correct and more robust.

Fix translation of escapes.  Still a hack.

Fix Empire client prompt in translation of EX and SY.

Fix markup: bogus numerical arguments that were mapped to zero
silently (troff) or under protest (groff); table column width (also
fixed some .L arguments to match actual game output); spacing in
no-fill text; stray .FI, .in and .ce messing up indentation; stray .L;
misspelled request and escape names; escaping of control and escape
characters; properly ignore form-feed; argument quoting; extra
arguments to .NF.  Still broken: .L abused for headings, which
triggers many groff warnings about negative indentation.

(nF, eF, bF, iF, lF, pF, cS, CS): Define to silence groff.

Convert tabs before \" comments into spaces (troff pitfall).

(SY, EX): Fix Empire client prompt.

(eF, EF): Font C doesn't exist, use R.

(N, EF): Define to R to silence groff.

4.2.13 last minute changes.

Change tarball names to empire$part-4.2.13.tar.gz.  Tarballs now
unpack in a directory whose name matches the tarball name, as usual.

Set archive members' owner, group and force sensible permissions.

(lwpInitContext): Fix .function for current versions of as.

(main, USERNAME): Change Windows user name from win-empcl2.8 to nobody
to get rid of the version number.  Keeping it up-to-date by hand is
too much work, but leaving it at 2.8 would be confusing.

(FREEBSDLFLAGS): Compile with symbols.
(HPCFLAGS, HPUXCFLAGS, RTPCLFLAGS, SOLCFLAGS, AIXCFLAGS): NOFLOCK is
unused, don't define it.

Don't fool around with obsolete strings.h, just include standard
string.h.

(move_ground): explore() used endsect without initialized in certain

Update for 4.2.13.

Remove outdated version information for now.  Keeping it up-to-date by
hand is too much work; should be automated.

New make target dist, to run new src/scripts/mkdist.

Creating make include files with make doesn't work with many makes out
there.  Back out for 4.2.13.  You have to create the make include
files by hand if they don't exist.  That's the case for freshly
checked out trees.

(show, show_item): No new `show' features without matching machine
readable dumps.  Back out `show item' for 4.2.13.

(nuk_add): Failed to call makenotlost() when reusing a `hole' in the
nuke file.

(RESOLVE_IPADDRESS): gethostbyaddr() uses a lot of stack space on some
versions of GNU libc, which can lead to nasty heap smashes (observed
with 2.2.93).  Don't define RESOLVE_IPADDRESS for now, until we
readjust thread stack sizes.

Document help command.  Closes #804550.

Garbage collection to side-step sparse file descriptor problem.
(io_select, io_flush, io_iopfromfd): Unused, remove.
(io_open): Allow more than one open for the same file descriptor.
The check is the last remaining use of io_list[], and it's
unimportant.
(io_list, niop, io_init): io_list[] no longer serves any purpose,
remove.  Sparse allocation of file descriptors (deplorable misfeature
of Winsock, at least some versions) is no longer a problem.
(getfdtablesize): Unused, remove.  Was broken for Windows anyway.

(io_open, io_iopfromfd): Properly check argument FD to protect
io_list[] indexing.
(niop, io_init): Store length of io_list[] in new niop.
(player_accept): Checking the socket file descriptor here is now
redundant.  Remove.

(msl_hit): Tell victim coordinates of incoming missile.  Closes

(rpt): Fix rpt[N_NUKE_SSTOP]; not every sub-launched missile is

to change the map command into the corresponding bmap command, which

(wripglob): Don't emit unnecessary includes.

(wrgamesdef): Generate EMPDIR instead of EMPPATH().  Change callers of
EMPPATH() to use EMPDIR.  This avoids triggering MSVC bugs, and drops
support for traditional, pre-ISO cpp.  Closes #753935.
(gamedir, lostfil, playerbin, updatebin): Unused, remove.

(payo, scuttle_tradeship, sdump): Disclose construction site only to
original owner and deities.  Closes #815197.

(KILL): Off by one in fnlist[].  This is why client option -k didn't
work.
(WAT, GKILL): Unused, remove.

(lnd_fortify): Do not fortify units embarked on ships or land units.

(take_move_in_mob): Automatic fortification on excess mobility may
fortify units while they are `at the prompt'.  That's okay.  But
action that consumes mobility must zap the fortification again.

(player_coms): Fix c_form for upgrade.  From Marc Olzheim.

Use strict & warnings.  Fix several minor bugs uncovered by it.

Semantics of assigning to $[ changed in Perl 5, and its use is `highly
discouraged'.  Programs obviously assumed $[ affects all arrays, but
it doesn't in Perl 5.  If these programs ever worked, then certainly
not with Perl 5.  Remove the assignments and shift indexes
accordingly.

Document automatic fortification.  Clarify engineer bonus.

(guerrilla): Give wandering che inexact, somewhat randomized
information on military.  Closes #750533.  Why?  Wandering che pick a
sector with minimal military from the adjacent sectors that can get
che.  Ties are broken in favour of the first sector examined.  Since
sectors are examined in the order given by by diroff[], che prefer
directions with low index in diroff[].  This tends to channel che
towards the northeast.  But the change makes ties very unlikely.

(lnd_sweep, lnd_mar_one_sector): Automatic fortification on excess
mobility may fortify units while they are `at the march prompt'.
That's okay.  But action that consumes mobility must zap the
fortification again.

(do_mob_land): Use excess mobility to fortify.  Note that units
requiring fuel to gain mobility never get excess mobility.  Adapted
patch from from Marc Olzheim.  Closes #725457.

(is_engineer, has_helpful_engineer): Rename.  Require allied
engineers.  This affecs command `fortify'.

(lnd_fortify): New, factored out of fort().
(fort): Use it; no functional changes.
(is_engineer): Move to logical place, external linkage.
